LPU hosting T-20 Invitational School Cricket Tournament 2014

Jalandhar, January 10, 2014: Lovely Professional University is hosting T-20 Invitational School Cricket Tournament 2014 to promote cricket at grass root level in the country.  As an under-19 T-20 format cricket tournament, it is being held under the guidance of university cricket experts. The one-week tournament, up to 15th January 2014 for 24 knock out matches, is being held at two pitches of LPU Sports Stadium. Tournament is exhibiting great cricketing action as many state and national under-14, 16 & 19 players, who have played under School Games Federation of India, are representing different teams.

Near 360 young cricketers from 24 top schools of Chandigarh and Punjab are participating. They are getting applaud from many thousands of university student- spectators for their strokes-full batting, alert-fielding, brilliant bowling & catches. The winner, first and second runners up teams will be awarded cash prizes worth Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 & Rs 10,000 respectively. NIS qualified officials are looking after all the affairs of the tournament to maintain general control of the game. The tournament is made more attractive as live commentary and telecasting of the matches is being done inside the entire university premises.

Encouraging budding cricketers of the state, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal informed: “Our University has great zeal to encourage sporting talent amongst Indian youth along with their academic abilities. This tournament has been designed as a sports platform for the school students of the state to showcase their cricketing passion. Through this platform they can further develop their talents on the cricket field like famous cricketers of the state Harbhajan Singh, Yash Pal Sharma and others.” Mittal further said: “Our step is to promote and develop the game from the initial level for the talented players living hidden in many schools, small towns, villages etc.”

Results of the matches played:

1.     Cambridge School, Phagwara defeated British Olivia Public School, Jalandhar by 8 Wickets.

2.      Gems Cambridge International School, Hoshiarpur defeated Baba Farid Public School, Faridkot by 10 wickets.

3.     MCA, Mohali defeated Sacred Heart Sr Sec School, Ludhiana by 6 wickets
