Punjab News/PAU student conferred with international plant nutrition scholar award

Ludhiana, November 20, 2013: A Ph.D student (Soil Science) of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Naveen Gupta has been conferred with the “International Plant Nutrition Scholar Award 2013” for his excellence in academics, co-curricular activities and international relevance of Ph.D research. The award, carrying a cash prize of US$ 2000 and a Certificate of Excellence, was presented to N. Gupta during the Regional Workshop on “Precision Agriculture,” jointly organised by the PAU and International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), Norcross, USA, on the University campus. N. Gupta is one of the four recipients of this award in South Asia.
The Chief Guest, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, PAU Vice-Chancellor; Dr B.S. Sidhu, Agriculture Commissioner, Government of Punjab; Dr S.S. Gosal, Director of Research, PAU; Dr Steven B. Phillips, Director, IPNI, Southeast Region, USA; Dr Kaushik Majumdar, South Asia Programme Director, IPNI; Dr M.L. Jat, Senior Scientist, CIMMYT; and Dr H.S. Sidhu, Research Engineer, BISA bestowed the award on the University student.
As a part of the collaborative project, N. Gupta is presently pursuing his Ph.D in Soil Science under the guidance of Dr S.S.Kukal, Professor of Soil Conservation, PAU. N. Gupta has earlier worked as research associate at PAU and Assistant Project Scientist with IPNI.
Dr Dhillon congratulated the PAU student for bringing laurels to the University and said that this will serve as an inspiration for other young scholars.
Extending his best wishes to the University student, Dr Majumdar said that in the era of globalisation, mobility of students is essential. Education is the backbone of the growth and development of the society, he highlighted.
Dr U.S. Sadana, Head, Department of Soil Science, lauded N. Gupta for this achievement and said that he has done excellent work in the field of soil and water conservation during his M.Sc at PAU.
