Ludhiana, May 15, 2013: A workshop on Quality and Compliances of wool was organised here on Wednesday.
The main objective of the workshop was to discuss and deliberate issues on the quality of wool and woolen products for export purposes and also to create capacity of the industry to understand compliance issues for export.
The workshop was attended by several industries personnel and also people related to research and development of wool industry.
The event was organised by Textiles Committee in association with Central Wool Development Board (CWDB), Wool Research Association (WRA) and Indian Woollen Mills Federation (IWMF).
Monika S. Garg, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India chaired the workshop as Chief Guest. Industry side was represented by Mridula Jain, Vice Chairperson of the Shawl Club and Virendra Sharma, President, Oswal Woollen Mills, Ludhiana. Besides, M. K. Bardhan, Director, Wool Research Association, Mahesh Sanil, Executive Director, Wool Texpro also attended the programme and made their presentation on issues relating to development of research in wool testing and on the compliance requirements.
Kartikay Dhanda, Director (Lab), Textiles Committee presented the laboratory facilities available in India specially focusing on laboratory services provided to industry in Ludhiana.
Dr P. Nayak, Secretary, Textiles Committee and K. K. Goyal, Executive Director, CWDB coordinated the programme.
After detailed deliberations, it was decided that there will be a regular interaction programme between the Textiles Committee, industry and other organisations to evolve strategies on the following:
· For upgrading laboratory facilities matching with the requirements of the modern day.
· Textiles Committee Laboratory at Ludhiana and Jaipur should be strengthened to offer best services for wool testing.
· In order to bridge the gap of technical man power availability to the industry, Textiles Committee along with WRA will draw a special programme to train man power under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS).
· Organisation of industry capacity building programme on the non tariff barriers (NTB) so as to help the industry to comply with the emerging barriers to remain competitive in the international market.
· For creating a brand for Indian Woollen products and those who are already having brands are to be supported from the market development assistance (MDA) and other such schemes already available in the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Textiles.
· The industry and Government will work with a synergy to enhance the trade facilitation issues.
The workshop was attended by more than 130 industry and research fraternity delegates. Ludhiana being the largest production center of wool and acrylic yarn in the country having more than 11,000 formal and informal units, employing more than 2.5 lakh labour with a total a turnover of Rs. 15,000 crores , the above workshop was applauded by the industry and future such capacity building programmes are sought by them.
